Interview with: Cory Brown from Fundy CrossFit
Last night at CrossFit I started a new page in my notebook called “Week 7”. Holy! Time is flying and I am loving every second of it.
This past week has been quite exciting in the CrossFit Community, as the 2014 Reebox CrossFit Open has started. You can check out more about the games here.
There are some coaches I see more than others – I see Cory a lot – but not usually coaching. He’s usually right beside us lifting weights and doing the WOD.
Enjoy the interview!
Hi Cory! Tell me about yourself and what you do!
Cory Brown, aged 38 years. I am a manager at UNB. My hobbies are CrossFit and watching movies. I am also a proud father and husband. I have two awesome kids, a boy who is 3.5 years old and a new born baby girl!
When did you join CrossFit?
I started CrossFitting a little over 2 years ago.
What were your goals when joining?
I really didn’t have many goals when I joined. To be honest I joined because my wife asked me to. My only goal, if you could call it that, was to keep going back no matter how sore I was. After about 6 weeks I was in love, and I haven’t looked back.
What are your goals now?
My goals now are more about lifestyle. I want to be a living example to my kids, and live a long life so I can enjoy them. I don’t just want to be healthy, I want to be fit.
What is one piece of advice you’d give to new CrossFitters?
I have three pieces of advice for new CrossFitters.
First, leave your ego at the door. CrossFit workouts will find and make obvious your weaknesses, this is supposed to happen so embrace it.
Second, give it at least three months to decide if it’s for you. CrossFit can be challenging, give your body and mind a chance to adjust to it.
Last, have fun. This should be the best hour of the day so throw some high fives!. It is the only place you can come where no one will judge you and where everyone is there looking for the same thing you are. No matter if you are an elite athlete or a beginner, we are all trying to get a little fitter today!
What is the most underrated workout?
I think the most underrated workout if a 500 meter row for time. It totally kicks my butt! It only takes me about 1:30.00 but leaves me without my wits for a little while.
What is your favourite lift?
I love the clean. There is nothing more satisfying then landing a good one. I was super proud of myself when I hit my first ever body weight clean.
What are some misconceptions that people might have about CrossFit and why aren’t they true?
I have heard so many misconceptions, I don’t even know where to begin. Let me just say that come to FCF, watch a class and decide for yourself. CrossFit prides itself on being open source – so come and really see what we are about.
How can I get the most of out CrossFit?
Getting the most out of CrossFit is easy. So up. Eat clean. Have fun.
