#30IN30 VERSION 2014 POST #23 – Backstreet Records

Backstreet Records has been a fixture in Uptown Saint John for… ever.

I love stopping in each Saturday, checking out the new arrivals and catching up on the local gossip from Gordie and Corey. (See 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11)

Since Adam and I have started buying and listening to records this year, we have been into Backstreet a lot more. I’m wondering if Adam bought me any of the goodies below for Christmas…. (update: the ALVVAYS album is in my hands! yay!)

What Have You Been Doin With Yer Time by Little You Little Me might be the best album to come out of Saint John this year.

The band gave the CD away for free in the music issue of Hard Times. You can still get it on cassette or on their bandcamp page.

#30IN30 VERSION 2014 POST #22 – Corn Crib

The Corn Crib has been around in the Saint John area since the fall of 2012. They’re located at the top of King Street and serve the community with food, health, body care and nutritional products!

The Corn Crib is my stop for protein powder (I’ve just recently started using it, maybe I will report back in the new year with my comments on it), bulk staples (like flour, spices and oats) & treats as well as natural make-up products.

I stopped by this week and snapped some photos of gift ideas for almost anyone in your life.

The Corn Crib has a great selection of natural beauty products including Pacifica and Logona.

Pacifica products are 100% vegan and cruelty-free.



The roller ball perfumes were a treat. The Brazilian Mango Grapefruit was my favourite – fresh, citrus-y and not too strong.


The packaging for the Pacifica products is so attractive. I’m imagining it in a Christmas stocking or if a gift bag for a friend.



The body cares lines span far beyond Pacifica – Corn Crib has a selection of bath & body products for men as well as additional brands for ladies.




The coffee selection at Corn Crib is so great.

Sissiboo is a coffee roaster from Bear River, Nova Scotia.



Level Ground coffee is a fair trade coffee company from British Colombia.


A large part of the Corn Crib in Saint John is their bulk food and spices sections.

After eating some of these salted lemon pistachios I was in heaven on earth. I bought about $1 worth. I’m thankful for this and also quite sad. I could have eaten about $7 worth… so maybe it’s actually a good thing I practiced some self control.


These chocolate covered popped quinoa treats were incredible. INCREDIBLE.

My name is Barb, and I CrossFit. (Phew, glad I got that off my chest)

Almost a year has gone by since I started at Fundy CrossFit. It’s been, hands down, the best year of my life. I’m happy. I’m fit. I’m STRONG.

Let me take you back to December 2013. I was very large. I weighed 228 pounds when I weighed myself over the Christmas Break. I was unhappy. None of my pants fit. My friend Gillian Goldie had been going to CrossFit for a quite a while and had told me repeatedly that I would LOVE it, if I tried it. The only thing I knew about CrossFit is that people who did it talked about it. I didn’t have any idea what happened there.

I took a leap of faith and decided that I’d try it for like… 2 months. I couldn’t even imagine signing on for any longer than that.

Boy was I wrong.

Guys, It’s the best. The atmosphere, the culture, the people, the camaraderie, the competition (it’s all friendly), Rich Froning. I love it all.

Rather than tell you all of the reasons you should try it, I thought I’d share a bit of my experience there with you.

This is a typical WOD (Workout of the Day) set-up, is we’re doing box jumps. Everyone works out together and it rules.


This is me in my PR lulus. This is photographic evidence of that time that I jerked 90 lbs 5 times! I can do more than that now, and the bar in this photo only has 65 lbs on it, but this was a huge moment.

This Saturday, 10am at Fundy CrossFit, they’re hosting a “bring a friend” day. It’s free. You show up in your gym clothes and the coaches will walk you though a typical CrossFit class. You’ll do a skill and a workout (or “WOD”) and you’ll go home.
